Every summer, when familiar mountain breezes sweep through the East Rift Valley of Hualien and Taitung, the “Valley Indigenous Festival – Tribal Food Paradise” returns once again to the valley landscape.
Travelers are invited to follow the trails of cooking smoke, flavors, and song into Indigenous communities, where forests, dining tables, and gatherings of people come together—offering an authentic glimpse into life in the East Rift Valley.
This year, the “Valley Indigenous Festival – Tribal Food Paradise” is themed around “Fermentation.”
Beginning with the Indigenous cultures of brewing and fermentation, the theme expands into food, aroma, memory, and everyday life, guiding visitors to rediscover the long-accumulated cultural landscapes between Indigenous communities and the land.
In the East Rift Valley, many flavors require time to slowly mature. Whether it is fermented wine, local ingredients, forest plants, or the moments shared around a communal table, each carries the wisdom of coexistence between Indigenous communities and their land.
“Fermentation” is not only a biological process—it is also a trace left by time, allowing culture, emotion, and memory to continue unfolding within daily life.
This summer, the Tribal Food Paradise will present flavor experiences, cultural dining tables, Indigenous journeys, and sensory interactions, inviting travelers into the forests and settlements of the East Rift Valley. Between nature and people, they can slowly experience the unique terroir and everyday life of Indigenous cultures in Hualien and Taitung.
